The central theme of Dr. Schneider's research program is to use quantitative genetic and genomic approaches to address primary constraints to swine production efficiency and product quality. This includes evaluation of strategies to alleviate genetic constraints by formulating relevant hypotheses, designing appropriate experiments, and developing sophisticated analyses to characterize genetic variation for economically important traits. Dr. Schneider will conduct quantitative genetic and genomic research to more effectively use genetic variation in swine. Statistical procedures are applied and expanded to estimate polygenic and QTL effects. Specific research efforts include procedures to (1) efficiently detect QTL regions affecting important traits, (2) characterize effects of marker alleles and their potential impact on genetic improvement through marker-assisted selection, (3) estimate genetic parameters required for prediction of EPDs for complex traits, (4) create and evaluate objectives and indices for selection of swine, and (5) determine whole genome associations.
