The Center for Grain and Animal Health Research (CGAHR) is part of the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) which represents the sole research component of the United States Department of Agriculture.  ARS has been a fixture in Manhattan, KS since 1919.  The research facility was completed in 1970 on a 12-acre tract of land deeded to the U.S. Department of Agriculture by the State of Kansas.

A focal point of grain quality research, the center is located in the heart of the Great Plains, which includes 13 states that produce more than two-thirds of all U.S. wheat, corn, sorghum, and soybeans.  The research center expanded its focus to include animal health research in 2010 with the relocation of the Arthropod-Borne Animal Diseases Research Unit from Laramie, WY.

CGAHR's Mission Statement

"Conduct innovative research and develop new technologies to solve problems related to natural resources conservation, the production, harvesting, storage, and utilization of grain to ensure a safe, abundant, high-quality grain supply, and conduct basic and applied studies on the arthropod transmitted viral diseases of domestic animals."

Our facilities boasts 120,000 sq. ft. that includes laboratory-office space, pilot plant, scale room, and grain elevator, cell culture lab, insectary, and Hard Winter Wheat Quality milling lab.  CGAHR was proud to host USDA's 150th Anniversary in April 2012. 

CGAHR scientists conduct research projects in cooperation with Kansas State University, and other land grant universities, industries, and scientific institutes through extramural funded projects.

Three research units are located in our main facility at 1515 College Avenue.  A fourth unit, the Hard Winter Wheat and Genetics Research Unit is located on the campus of Kansas State University.
