Location: Soil Dynamics Research
Project Number: 6010-11120-009-016-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Jan 1, 2018
End Date: Dec 31, 2022
Objective:
We propose to evaluate Flue Gas Desulfurized (FGD) gypsum influences on soil physical properties and losses of Phosphorus (P) from cropping systems, horticulture systems, and targeted application in surface water drainage areas. The research will help establish proper rates of FGD gypsum to reduce losses of P in runoff and improve soil productivity and plant productivity. We will also conduct research on the use of gypsum as a bedding material in poultry production houses.
Approach:
The use of Flue Gas Desulfurized (FGD) gypsum in Agriculture will be studied in four different areas over a three year period. 1) FGD gypsum will be applied to row crop production systems with and without filter strips to evaluate changes in available soil Phosphorus (P) and P losses in runoff over three years. These studies will be conducted in Auburn, AL, Tifton, GA, and Oxford, MS. Rainfall simulation will be utilized to measure the potential impact of gypsum application to improve runoff water quality at each location. 2) FGD gypsum will be applied in nursery production to evaluate plant growth and quality for mass market. The use of FGD gypsum in pots will also be evaluated for potential water quality benefit in runoff from the nursery facilities. 3) FGD gypsum will be utilized in targeted application in surface water drainage areas, where different methods will be examined to utilize FGD gypsum to intercept soluble P from surface water runoff. 4) The use of FGD gypsum as a bedding material in poultry house production will be evaluated.
