Research Project: Effect of Toxisome Structure on Pathogenicity to Small Grain Crops

Location: Cereal Disease Lab

Project Number: 5062-21220-024-003-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Feb 7, 2019
End Date: Jul 30, 2022

Objective:
Phenotypic assessment of small grains to evaluate Fusarium head blight disease damage. Screening of diverse small grain genotypes with mutant strains of the pathogen altered in toxisome structure.

Approach:
Mutant strains of the FHB pathogen altered in the ability to form a modified endoplasmic reticulum required for mycotoxin synthesis will be created by genetic modification. Mutants will be assessed for their ability to form toxisomes and produce DON and other metabolites. Diverse lines of wheat and barley as well as non-cultivated native plants will be tested for altered disease reaction to these mutant strains.
