Location: Environmental Microbial & Food Safety Laboratory
Project Number: 8042-32420-009-023-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 1, 2020
End Date: Jul 31, 2025
Objective:
The objective is to determine factors which affect the survival of enteric bacterial pathogens in soils amended with Biological Soil Amendments of Animal Origin (BSAAO) utilizing growth chamber and field experiments.
Approach:
This research project will investigate the role of specific factors (initial moisture, water extractable carbon) in soils amended with untreated and treated biological soil amendments of animal origin on the survival of enteric bacterial pathogens (E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella enterica). This work will utilize the fields and BSL-2 growth chambers at NEA BARC EMFSL. Methods and techniques previously utilized in ARS research on this topic will be utilized.
