Research Project: Genetic Characterization of Citrus and Date Germplasm

Location: National Clonal Germplasm Repository for Citrus

Project Number: 2036-21000-012-001-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 1, 2021
End Date: Oct 1, 2025

Objective:
Provides expertise in the area of genetic analysis of citrus and date germplasm. This supports the mission of the Repository to collect, maintain, evaluate, and distribute germplasm of citrus, date palms, and related taxa.

Approach:
Germplasm is maintained under field conditions and as pathogen-tested accessions in insect-proof screenhouses and greenhouses. Some accessions may be maintained in other manners. Research is necessary to support the objectives in the areas of evaluation, enhancement, long-term preservation, utilization, etc. Some projects are beyond the scope of ARS resources devoted to the project. Repository staff currently lacks genetic expertise. Germplasm collections often contain duplicate accessions, gaps in accessions, redundancies in received populations, etc. Genetic analysis via the use of molecular markers can reduce these problem areas in the collections. Genetic characterization of germplasm accessions will allow rationalization of the collection, increasing the efficiency of management and utilization.
