Research Project: Evaluation the potential of the silvopastoral cattle production system to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Peruvian tropics.

Location: Dairy Forage Research

Project Number: 5090-21500-002-004-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Dec 23, 2020
End Date: May 31, 2024

Objective:
The aim of the proposed project is to increase sustainability and resilience of Peruvian Amazon livestock systems through silvopastoralism. The specific objectives of this project are: Perform a holistic assessment of sustainability and resilience of silvopastoral systems (SPS) compared with conventional pasture systems (CPS). Estimate carbon storage potential of SPS compared with CPS. Recommend strategies for sustainable and resilient livestock production in the Amazon to stakeholders including producers, policy makers and industry leaders. Strengthen students’ capacities in sustainability assessment and livestock production systems in tropical regions.

Approach:
The parties will evaluate and compare silvopastoral and conventional pasture systems in a holistic assessment including life cycle assessment (LCA), economic assessment, socio-economic assessment, resilience assessment, and carbon storage measurements.
