Location: Agricultural Genetic Resources Preservation Research
Project Number: 3012-21000-017-006-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 1, 2020
End Date: Aug 31, 2025
Objective:
Develop training materials (videos, ebook chapters) that relate to the conservation of tropical plant genetic resources in genebanks. Topics will include: Disease detection and control; Orchard/field maintenance practices (pruning, grafting, rooting, planting, etc.); Cryopreservation of plant propagules; Tissue culture techniques; and Soil/leaf sampling and nutrition.
Prepare online learning content relating to phenotyping and genotyping activities in genebanks.
Approach:
The Post-doctoral associate, Cooperator and ARS PI will collaborate with USDA National Plant Germplasm System repository locations in Hilo, Hawaii, Miami, Florida, and Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, to target specific content of interest and film video footage for the training activities. Video, images, and text will be edited and prepared for phenotyping and genotyping training content as well as incorporation into ebook chapters and stand-alone videos that describe specific critical tasks within the genebank. This content will be made freely available to the public and released following USDA Office of Communications guidelines.
