Location: Horticultural Crops Disease and Pest Management Research Unit
Project Number: 2072-22000-046-010-G
Project Type: Grant
Start Date: Aug 1, 2020
End Date: Oct 31, 2023
Objective:
Compare new raspberry cultivar and an advanced selection with industry standard cultivars for Individually Quick Frozen (IQF) processing quality, yield, pest tolerance, and winter hardiness.
Approach:
This project aims to fully evaluate the commercial performance of two newly available raspberry cultivars that have the potential to greatly benefit the Pacific Northwest (PNW) red raspberry industry. These two cultivars were released at different times and have different levels of grower adoption. Just over 94,000 ‘Cascade Premier’ plants were planted by PNW growers on approximately 54 Acres in 2019. Commercial-scale performance of ‘Cascade Premier’ will be evaluated on existing trial plots established in 2019 by cooperators and evaluated in project years 1 and 2. Trial plots of WSU 2188 will be newly established in project year 1 and evaluated in project years 2 and 3. Each trial plot is or will be 1-4 acres in size, enough to produce a minimum of 1,000 pounds of fruit at each harvest day for a high-quality IQF evaluation. Each trial plot of ‘Cascade Premier’ or WSU 2188 will be compared with another industry standard cultivar, such as ‘Meeker’, ‘WakeHaven®’ or ‘WakeField®’.
