Research Project: Enabling Genomics-Assisted Specialty Crop Breeding and Research through Advanced Database Resources

Location: National Clonal Germplasm Repository

Project Number: 2072-21000-059-004-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2022
End Date: Sep 14, 2024

Objective:
Objective 1. Data – Collect, curate, and integrate all types of genomics, genetics, and breeding big data in easy-to-use and robust crop-specific databases. Objective 2. Tools – Develop and integrate new or improved tools to promote the collection, integration, and utilization of big data by scientists and breeders. Objective 3. Outreach – Provide scientists and breeders with personalized training for field data collection software (Field Book App), big data management, and database resources.

Approach:
- Advance three (Rosaceae, Vaccinium, Pulses) of four crop specific databases with new content and data types (genotypic and phenotypic) for more effective and efficient utilization across data types and crops. - Perform analyses on big data and improve integration of diverse data types through more interconnected search results. - Explore artificial intelligence (AI) to improve translation of global predictions for optimizing complex utilization in US breeding programs - Quantify the economic value of the data and tools in enabling tree fruit, berry and pulse crop research discovery and crop improvement - Provide expert trainers to deliver on-site training in use of database tools. - Use communication platforms to disseminate information to stakeholders.
