Objectives
Objective 1: Develop control measures for weeds in vegetables, fruits, and specialty crops. [NP304, C2, PS 2A]
Objective 2: Determine herbicide residues in harvested product. [NP 304, C2, PS 2A]
Approach
Candidate herbicides for use in minor crops will be identified. Herbicides alone or in combination with other tactics will be evaluated under field conditions and crop and/or weed responses will be determined.
Progress Report
Significant progress has been made on developing control measures for weeds in vegetable crops (Objective 1).
Surveys of lima bean and snap bean production fields have been conducted in the Pacific Northwest, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic regions. In addition to characterizing the weed community at the time of crop harvest, field management records have been compiled. This research is in support of Sub-objective 2.1 (determine the scope of the problem of weeds and their management in processing vegetable legumes, specifically snap bean) of parent project 5012-12220-010-000D which will ultimately ensure new control measures target the most important weed species in the crop.
Snap bean tolerance to preemergence applications of metribuzin, flumioxazin, lactofen, and saflufenacil has been tested under field conditions. Lactofen has excellent crop safety across all snap bean cultivars. These results provide support for registration of lactofen on snap bean. In contrast, metribuzin is highly injurious to snap bean except for a single cultivar. While flumioxazin and saflufenacil injured certain cultivars, genome-wide association modeling of crop tolerance in a snap bean diversity panel identified genomic regions associated with crop tolerance to the herbicides.
Herbicide residues in vegetable crops (Objective 2) was not conducted because herbicide residues are not the limiting factor for product registrations on processing vegetable legumes, but rather, unknown crop tolerance to herbicides.
