Research Project: National Agroecosystem Model Support for the Long-term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) Network

Location: Grassland Soil and Water Research Laboratory

Project Number: 3098-13610-009-085-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2020
End Date: Sep 30, 2022

Objective:
The objective of this work is to apply the latest version of the National Agroecosystem Model to 8 LTAR watershed monitoring network sites. This will be used to predict the impact of past and future conservation efforts on sediment and nutrient loads in these regions.

Approach:
Data collected at suitable LTAR sites will be used to calibrate the National Agroecosystem Model watershed at each site. SWAT+ is used as the modeling engine for the National Agroecosystem Model and will be calibrated using runoff, sediment, nutrient loss, crop growth and biomass where available. Parameter values from the calibrated SWAT+ model will be incorporated into larger scale models to generate regional or national predictions. A variety of scenarios will be simulated which describe current “business as usual” and progressive “aspirational” agricultural systems.
