Research Project: Breeding Corn to Enable Organic Seed Production

Location: Corn Insects and Crop Genetics Research

Project Number: 5030-21000-073-017-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2020
End Date: Aug 31, 2025

Objective:
Our objective is to develop corn hybrids that are well suited to organic seed production systems.

Approach:
We will develop triple cross hybrids with characteristics desired by organic producers such as nutritional quality, native resistance to insects and disease and ability to exclude GMO pollen. Parents of these hybrids will be developed using a novel doubled haploid approach that does not require chemical treatment of the plants. Hybrids will be screened for performance in organic sites. Feedback will be obtained from organic farmers about the performance of the hybrids. Superior hybrids will be made available to companies who sell seeds for production of organic corn.
