Research Project: Characterize Rootworm Larvae For BT Tolerance and Artificial Diets for Improved Understanding of Rootworm Biology and Management

Location: Plant Genetics Research

Project Number: 5070-21220-046-001-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Dec 1, 2020
End Date: Nov 30, 2025

Objective:
1) Characterize heritability and other traits of rootworm larvae that exhibit Bt tolerance.

Approach:
Newly emerged virgin male and female western corn rootworm adults from both Cry34/35Ab1-selected colonies and their control colony will be collected and isolated from each other by the cooperator. Reciprocal cross colonies will be created by combining at least 100 Cry34/35Ab1-selected males with 100 control females and vice versa for each from both Cry34/35Ab1-selected colonies. Eggs from these colonies will be collected and tested along with those of the parental Cry34/35Ab1-selected and control colonies in diet-toxicity and plant assays similar to those that we have published previously.
