Research Project: Monitoring Cereal Rust Development on Alternate Hosts

Location: Cereal Disease Lab

Project Number: 5062-21220-025-008-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 1, 2021
End Date: Apr 30, 2025

Objective:
The overall objective of the agreement is to monitor rust development on alternate hosts of cereal rusts and to monitor potential incursion of stem rust races of foreign origin, such as Ug99, in the United States through sentinel plots. Specific objectives include: 1) Establish and maintain rust sentinel plots; 2) Observe and report rust development on aecial and telial hosts; and 3) Collect and mail samples to ARS.

Approach:
ARS will provide seed of sentinel plots, and Cooperator will plant and maintain the plots in designated locations, observe rust development, and collect rust samples from sentinel plots. Cooperator will survey and monitor rust development and collect rust samples from Berberis spp. and other plants that serve as the alternate hosts of cereal rusts. Rust samples will be delivered to ARS for analysis.
