Research Project: Swine Thermal Stress Mobile Application HotHog

Location: Livestock Behavior Research

Project Number: 5020-32000-014-003-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Dec 15, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2024

Objective:
To reduce the negative effects of thermal stress on sows managed under commercial production conditions through improvements in the smartphone application known as HotHog.

Approach:
The swine thermal stress mobile application HotHog, developed by ARS and Cooperator, will be updated and upgraded based on ARS input. Software support and regular maintenance will be performed to ensure proper functionality of the swine thermal stress mobile application and quarterly end user metrics will be collected by the cooperator. The swine thermal stress mobile application will be made available on both iOS and Android platforms and will be hosted on the Cooperator’s server, using cross-platform software development package or native smartphone application development. Prototypes will be provided to ARS and external testers for evaluation and if necessary, changes will be made to the mobile application software prior to its release to end users. The swine thermal stress mobile application will be made available to end users at no cost.
