Location: Crop Germplasm Research
Project Number: 3091-21000-046-006-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Jun 13, 2021
End Date: Jun 12, 2025
Objective:
The objective of this project is to continue development of database resources of pecan. The Pecan ARS database was initially constructed as part of the SCRI project, 2016-2021. The database includes phenotypic information documenting the pecan trees growing in the established orchard of the U.S. Carya Germplasm Repository Collection and also those trees that are part of the USDA breeding program. Continued development of the database is required to integrate genomic, phenotypic UAV images, and seasonal phenotypic measurments collected by USDA employees and collaborators. Cleaning, verification, and loading of phenotypic measurements into the established database infrastructure to allow seamless access and visualization of historical data. Additional development is also required to integrate import/export/API functionality with GRIN-Global, and web-based access of the orchard.
Approach:
The database is built on Microsoft SQL using secure, standard connections and formats. Data is being loaded from numerous Excel spreadsheets into the database using custom-built SQL stored procedures. APIs are being built using Microsoft .NET standards to allow access to public information and secured, restricted access to more sensitive data. A web interface is being built using C# and standard .NET framework and tools to provide the ability to view, download, and upload data directly to/from the database upon proper authentication and authorization. Additional tools will be evaluated to provide other visualization and analytical capabilities. GRIN-Global export capability will be developed using either SSIS (SQL Service Integration Services) processes, or an API, if that is provided by GRIN-Global.
