Research Project: Enabling Sustainable Landscape Design for Continual Improvement of Operating Bioenergy Supply Systems - Ames (McDonald)

Location: Soil Management Research

Project Number: 5060-11610-003-009-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 1, 2021
End Date: Aug 31, 2021

Objective:
Collect and quantify above- and below-ground vegetative biomass (i.e., plant roots) from Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) CP-38 sites established for the dual purpose of producing cellulosic biomass and wildlife habitat on degraded or vulnerable lands that were seeded as part of the landscape design project.

Approach:
Cooperator collects soil and plant tissue samples, conducts experiments focused on soil organic carbon, analyzes data from long-term cropping system and CP-38 CRP sites, analyzes and interprets data. Cooperator interfaces with other project partners (e.g., simulation modelers, engineers, agronomists, and others) working on soil carbon, soil health, and landscape design in Ames, Iowa; Morris, Minnesota; Lincoln, Nebraska and elsewhere.
