Location: Cotton Ginning Research
Project Number: 6066-41440-009-008-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Jul 1, 2021
End Date: Jun 30, 2025
Objective:
1) Characterize the U.S. Upland Cotton Core Set of allelic richness for root traits, water use efficiency, and yield.
2) Correlate the root phenotypic information with the existing genotypic information of the Core Set, identify molecular markers associated with root traits that improve water use efficiency and yield of cotton.
3) Determine the effects of drought tolerance research on cotton ginning production, fiber quality and cottonseed.
Approach:
A core set of twenty cotton accessions which represents 75% of the elite U.S. upland cotton gene pool, will be evaluated in greenhouse and field experiments for root characteristics, water use efficiency, and agronomic performance. Further, this information will be used along with molecular marker analysis to identify molecular markers associated with variation in root and physiological traits.
