Research Project: Watershed Modeling to Improve Conservation Planning Approaches

Location: Pasture Systems & Watershed Management Research

Project Number: 8070-21600-001-005-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2020
End Date: Sep 30, 2024

Objective:
To support the modeling work in our CEAP/LTAR watersheds modernizing watershed planning approaches and developing traditional as well streamlined watershed planning strategies using ARS-derived protocols, such as the ACPF in the Upper Chesapeake Region (Susquehanna River Basin).

Approach:
Approach is to develop detailed, site-specific modeling scenarios by using Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) or other process-based watershed models to predict the watershed outcomes of traditional and novel watershed planning approaches and complete scenario development and assessments of model runs, providing estimates of nutrient and sediment outcomes of these approaches assuming that their recommendations were implemented. Results from modeling work will be summarized and generalized into guidance that can be used as an add-on filter to current planning approaches in order to better inform more environmentally effective selection and/or placement of conservation practices
