Location: Cattle Fever Tick Research Unit
Project Number: 3094-32000-042-094-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 15, 2021
End Date: Mar 14, 2025
Objective:
The overall objectives of this project are to 1) develop sample preparation and extraction methods for serum and plasma samples taken from cattle at the USDA, ARS, Cattle Fever Tick Research Laboratory that have been treated with various formulations of macrocyclic lactones for controlling cattle fever ticks, and 2) analyze and interpret pharmacokinetic values of macrocyclic lactones in the plasma/serum of cattle that have been treated with various formulations of macrocyclic lactones for controlling cattle fever ticks.
Approach:
Blood samples collected during macrocyclic lactone efficacy pasture studies as part of completion of the omnibus-funded cattle fever tick projects, specifically the Double Moxidectin and the Bm86 + Doramectin/Eprinomectin Synergy studies, will be processed at the USDA, ARS, Cattle Fever Tick Research Laboratory to obtain serum and/or plasma. ARS will then provide the processed serum/plasma samples to the Cooperator to develop macrocyclic lactone extraction and analysis protocols and to conduct the pharmacokinetic analysis. This data will be utilized to determine if various formulations and application rates of macrocyclic lactones reach plasma/serum levels that are efficacious for controlling cattle fever ticks on treated cattle.
