Research Project: Plant Hormones, Bioregulators, and Biotic and Abiotic Stress Tolerance

Location: Genetic Improvement for Fruits & Vegetables Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-21000-305-003-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 31, 2021
End Date: Aug 30, 2024

Objective:
The objective of this project is to delineate plant hormones critical in developing novel tomato germplasm resistant to external biotic and abiotic stress; develop novel information on the role of hormone(s) in regulating responses to biotic and abiotic stresses of plants grown in greenhouse versus open fields; and provide mentorship to a postdoctoral researcher in cooperation with the Cooperator.

Approach:
Elite germplasm developed jointly with the Cooperator will be analyzed for hormonal content and individually tested for resilience to specific biotic and abiotic stresses. ARS investigator and postdoctoral fellow will analyze the experimental tissues from elite germplasm and control plants for metabolome. Together with the Cooperator the RNAseq datasets will be jointly analyzed. The project will be conducted jointly with the Cooperator and ARS scientists and involve the Postdoctoral Fellow. Appropriate statistics will be applied to define various interactions.
