Research Project: Gypsum Use in Horticulture Research

Location: Soil Dynamics Research

Project Number: 6010-11120-009-027-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 30, 2021
End Date: Aug 29, 2026

Objective:
Increase environmental sustainability of the Horticulture Industry production systems using gypsum amendments. Research can include but is not limited to the evaluation of the efficacy of gypsum as a horticultural media amendment for controlling phosphorus (P) leaching.

Approach:
In response to agriculture’s contribution to surface water quality, considerable effort is being made to develop best management practices to reduce nutrient loss in horticulture production systems. Funds will be used for evaluation of the efficacy of gypsum as a horticultural media amendment for controlling phosphorus (P) leaching for horticulture production systems. Specific topics of study will include: 1) The utilization of gypsum in potting media to prevent P leaching from pots.Studies will be conducted for multiple production systems at multiple locations. 2) Using gypsum as a filter barrier for the water moving off horticulture production facilities. Development of filter barrier structures will be undertaken.
