Research Project: Contribution of Legacy P to Watershed Outcomes - Phase 1 (Beltsville)

Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-13610-030-047-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2021
End Date: Jul 30, 2026

Objective:
1. For legacy P and concentrated overland flow mechanisms associated with natural and man-made channels as well as support new mechanistic model algorithms for legacy P fate in croplands and riparian buffers. 2. Following the simulation of baseline legacy phosphorus processes in SWAT, we will simulate the recommended watershed strategy for cost-effective mitigation of legacy phosphorus sources developed at the conclusion of Phase 1 of the project. 3. We will work with the legacy phosphorus modeling community in general, and SWAT developers, in specific, to ensure that any improvements to the representation of legacy phosphorus processes are exchanged and used in our final assessment, as well as in their final assessment of the Lower Chesapeake Bay region, of watershed outcomes.

Approach:
We will apply new knowledge learned from our Phase 1 data analysis efforts to identify current gaps in knowledge and limitations of current models. We will propose solutions to address those limitations and, where feasible, implement and test them in models. This will primarily be accomplished through SWAT simulation of the Choptank River watershed. The specific objectives for the Lower Chesapeake Bay site will expand from research carried out under Phase 1.
