Research Project: Improvements to Cotton Quality Measurement

Location: Cotton Quality and Innovation Research

Project Number: 6054-44000-080-016-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 1, 2023
End Date: Dec 31, 2023

Objective:
The objectives of this project are: 1) Continue the development of a robotic system for fiber quality measurements at the gin and 2) Investigate the influence of non-lint content on fiber quality measurements via High Volume Instrument.

Approach:
Continue the development of a robotic system for fiber quality measurements at the gin. The improved digital camera system will be tested in both a laboratory setting and commercial cotton gin setting. Calibration materials obtained from the Agricultural Marketing Service and real-world cotton samples will be utilized in the testing. The digital images will be collected and processed for the prediction of AMS leaf grade and color grade. Investigate the influence of non-lint content on fiber quality measurements Several cottons with diverse length, color, and micronaire will be mechanically cleaned to remove all impurities. New fiber quality measurements will be gathered on the cleaned cottons. Known amounts of specific types and blends of non-lint materials will be uniformly blended back into the samples. A new set of high-volume instrument measurements will be taken on each blended sample. Data analysis will be outsourced to a collaborator to build a model of the influence of non-lint content type and amount on individual quality traits.
