Research Project: Contribution of Legacy P to Watershed Outcomes - Phase 2, Western Lake Erie Basin

Location: Soil Drainage Research

Project Number: 5080-13210-003-020-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Sep 20, 2021
End Date: Jul 30, 2026

Objective:
1) Improve and assess simulation of legacy phosphorus within the Western Lake Erie Basin watershed 2) Evaluate scenarios and strategies for mitigating legacy phosphorus within the Western Lake Erie Basin watershed

Approach:
• We will participate in the workshop organized by the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) developers team, and contribute to the discussions regarding model improvements. We will assist the lead team in proposing SWAT source code modifications to improve simulation of Legacy P in MRW and other watersheds of interest. • We will work with the legacy phosphorus modeling community in general, and SWAT developers, in specific, to ensure that any improvements to the representation of legacy phosphorus processes are exchanged and incorporated in our field-scale SWAT model for the WLEB • Using the improved SWAT model for the WLEB, we will evaluate the impacts of recommended watershed strategies for cost-effective mitigation of legacy P sources developed at the conclusion of Phase 1 of the project.
