Research Project: Coordinated Approach to Coffee Leaf Rust

Location: Tropical Plant Genetic Resources and Disease Research

Project Number: 2040-21000-019-005-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 1, 2022
End Date: Aug 31, 2025

Objective:
The objective of this proposal are to 1) propagate and evaluate coffee leaf rust resistant varieties, 2) survey and monitor the extent of CLR in Hawaii, 3)develop field management protocols, 4)evaluate genotype and genetic diversity of CLR, and 5) determine the economic impact of CLR on coffee growers.

Approach:
Multifaceted research will be conducted in collaboration with ARS scientists in Hawaii and Puerto Rico, the U.S. coffee industry, University of Hawaii and University of Puerto Rico researchers and extension agents, and Purdue University. The coordinated approach includes evaluating disease resistant cultivars, fungicide treatments, horticultural practices, pathogen detection and genetics, environmental monitoring, and biocontrol agents for protecting the coffee industry from CLR and securing long-term profitability.
