Research Project: Breeding Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) Resistant Durum Varieties for Montana

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-097-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2026

Objective:
1. Screen breeding progeny to identify Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistant or low DON accumulation genotypes. We anticipate that the hexaploid derived sources of resistance will segregate normally and be associated with increased FHB resistance and decreased DON. 2. Screen segregating populations containing Fhb7 for FHB resistance in the field. Intercross genotypes with good FHB resistance and low DON levels from objective one to allow pyramiding of best FHB resistance alleles including Fhb1, Fhb7, and non-Fhb sources of resistance.

Approach:
Screen progeny from populations segregating for Fhb1, Fhb7 to identify Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistant or low DON accumulating genotypes. Measure FHB resistance and DON levels in a controlled field setting. Intercross FHB resistant genotypes to pyramid FHB resistance alleles including Fhb1, Fhb7, and non-FHB sources. Advance FHB resistant and low DON accumulating varieties toward varietal release. The new FHB resistant lines/populations incorporating Fhb1, non-Fhb1, and Fhb7 sources being developed in Montana will be available for other breeding programs and addresses the USWBSI DUR-CP research priority of incorporating FHB resistance from diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid wheat accessions into adapted durum backgrounds and develop elite durum germplasm using marker assisted selection.
