Research Project: Postharvest Treatment of Brown Marmorated Stinkbug

Location: Commodity Protection and Quality Research

Project Number: 2034-43000-043-063-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 1, 2021
End Date: Oct 31, 2024

Objective:
The objective of this project is to control brown marmorated stinkbug in container consignments exported to Australia using ethyl formate fumigation whereby the formulation contains a nitrogen balance.

Approach:
Utilize a cooperative effort between USDA-ARS, industry, and foreign counterparts. The research is planned in phases to be executed concurrently. Phase 1. Conduct confirmatory 4-h ethyl formate fumigations of diapausing brown marmorated stinkbug at 10 °C to yield a Ct of 58 mg L-1 h. Three replicates of 150 specimens will be tested with 50 total nontreated diapausing controls. Phase 2) Conduct confirmatory 6-h ethyl formate fumigations of diapausing brown marmorated stinkbug at 10 °C to yield a Ct of 63 mg L-1 h. Three replicates of 150 specimens will be tested with 50 total nontreated diapausing controls. Phase 3) Conduct confirmatory 8-h ethyl formate fumigations of diapausing brown marmorated stinkbug at 10 °C to yield Ct of 68 mg L-1 h. Three replicates of 150 specimens will be tested with 50 total nontreated diapausing controls. Finally, results will be disseminated to the National Plant Protection Organizations (NPPOs) of Australia and New Zealand.
