Research Project: Development of a Carbon Dynamics Model for Predicting GHG Emission and Sequestration in Croplands

Location: Grassland Soil and Water Research Laboratory

Project Number: 3098-13610-009-096-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Dec 15, 2022
End Date: Dec 31, 2023

Objective:
Develop a carbon dynamic model and integrate into the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) for Korean cropland agriculture. The model will be validated for assessment of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission in field-scales in South Korea. Develop an implementation technology for mitigation of GHS emissions in croplands across Korea, the US, and around the world.

Approach:
ARS, RDA, and Texas A&M will collaborate on developing a carbon dynamics model for predicting GHG emission and carbon sequestration in cropland considering agricultural conditions in South Korea. Model development and validation will be accomplished using field data from RDA. RDA will build a framework for integrated management of carbon in the croplands of South Korea. Distributed data including weather, soil properties, agricultural practice management, monitoring data, a protocol for assessing carbon in croplands, and a modeling tool will comprise the framework.
