Location: Range Management Research
Project Number: 3050-21600-001-101-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Oct 15, 2022
End Date: Oct 14, 2025
Objective:
This project aims to advance nutrient circularity via manureshed management in regional agri-food systems and agri-food supply chains to help ensure a steady supply of nutrients from crop production even in the face of fertilizer scarcity, reduce import costs for producers, help to redistribute manure from hotspots for a better quality of life for residents, and help to protect water quality.
Approach:
Launch the Manureshed Action Research Cycle in three systems to prioritize knowledge co-production and translational research with stakeholders to improve chances for transformation on the ground. The steps of the Manureshed Action Research Cycle are as follows:
1. Map manure sources and sinks within region or supply chain;
2. Document existing manure recycling in the region or supply chain by manureshed networks;
3. Evaluate opportunities and barriers for coordinated recycling with manureshed networks;
4. Assess trade-offs of approaches to manureshed management with diverse stakeholders;
5. Plan actions with diverse stakeholders; ... Return to #1 and track progress over time.
