Research Project: Renewal and Advance of Cotton Genetic Resources Through Use of a Costa Rican Counter Season Nursery

Location: Crop Germplasm Research

Project Number: 3091-21000-048-005-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2022
End Date: Jun 30, 2024

Objective:
The objective of this cooperation is to help fund a contractor who has developed and is managing a cotton winter nursery. The contractor will manage the nursery so that seed is increased to levels that will facilitate ongoing cotton research and breeding efforts by scientists interested in utilizing the diversity of cotton genetic resources for basic and applied research to improve the crop.

Approach:
Contractor retained by Cotton Incorporated will manage the cotton winter nursery with the goal of increasing seed of the National Cotton Germplasm Collection. Roguing of genetic materials and forced self-pollination ("selfing") will be performed to maintain purity during seed renewal and generational advancement. The contractor will create hybrids for population development when appropriate.
