Research Project: Computational Tools & Decision Support System Technologies for Agricultural Watershed Physical Processes, Water Quality and Ground Water Management

Location: Watershed Physical Processes Research

Project Number: 6060-13000-030-001-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2022
End Date: Jun 30, 2027

Objective:
1. Develop physically based multidimensional numerical models and technology for watershed erosion and sediment transport processes, water quality issues due to agro-pollution, and surface-groundwater interactions in agriculture landscapes. 2. Enhance the Decision Support System for the web-based Agricultural Integrated Management System (AIMS) by integrating watershed and channel network technology with geospatial and remote sensing data for effective watershed runoff, sediment, and water quality management.

Approach:
In order to better assess and predict watershed runoff, soil erosion, sediment and pollutant transport, water quality, surface water - groundwater interaction, software improvements, remote sensing technology application and decision support for watershed management, existing technology must be upgraded to assess and improve predictions for more realistic conditions in particular those that are encountered during extreme events that threatens life, property and agricultural production areas. The first objective focuses on the development and improvement of numerical models to study the general flow hydrodynamics, suspended sediments and pollutant transport in channel networks of a watershed and to understand the detailed physical processes of soil erosion and gully erosion induced by rainfall in a watershed. It is related to the Action Plan of the NP 211, Component 1: Effective Water Management in Agriculture; Component 2: Erosion, Sedimentation, and Water Quality Protection; Component 4: Watershed Management to Improve Agroecosystem Services. The second objective relates to the development of a web based system to disseminate seamless data for numerical modeling purposes, and to provide automated data preparation for simulation-based decision making. This objective is related to NP 211, Component 1: Effective Water Management in Agriculture; and, Component 4: Watershed Management to Improve Agroecosystem Services.
