Research Project: Evaluation of the Hop Cyst Nematode, Heterodera Humuli, an Emerging Pathogen of United States Hop (Humulus Lupulus) Production

Location: Horticultural Crops Disease and Pest Management Research Unit

Project Number: 2072-22000-046-032-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2025

Objective:
Objective 1. Survey Pacific Northwest hops for plant-parasitic nematodes. Objective 2. Screen hop varieties against plant-parasitic nematodes.

Approach:
Towards Objective 1, soil samples will be collected across hop production regions of the Pacific Northwest and nematode type and density will be determined. ARS PI will be responsible for the collection of samples and the quantification and identification of nematodes using morphological and molecular techniques. Towards Objective 2, the ARS PI will be responsible for screening hop varieties against plant-parasitic nematodes. In greenhouse studies, hop varieties will be screened against the most common plant-parasitic nematodes identified during the survey as part of Objective 1. This data will be shared with hop growers to direct plant selection in fields where plant-parasitic nematodes are of concern. The ARS scientist will participate in outreach activities related to the project, including making presentations at grower meetings, preparing scientific publications and participation research meetings.
