Research Project: Enhance Barley Breeding and Pest Research Capabilities

Location: Wheat, Sorghum and Forage Research

Project Number: 3042-21000-035-005-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2022
End Date: Jul 31, 2026

Objective:
Enhance barley breeding efforts for pest resistance by evaluating winter barley germplasm for resistance to diseases including: 1) Bacterial diseases such as Bacterial leaf streak; 2) Viruses such as barley yellow dwarf virus; and 3) Fungal diseases such as leaf, stem, and stripe rust. Develop improved barley populations by introgressing identified resistance genes or QTLs into winter hardy and high yielding germplasm.

Approach:
1) We will screen UNL winter barley germplasm to evaluate resistance to bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases. Currently the program evaluates wheat germplasm for these diseases, and we will expand our inoculated testing sites to include barley. 2) We will develop mapping populations to identify potential sources for resistance and will generate DNA markers to evaluate these populations. 3) Improved germplasm will be made available to other breeders.
