Research Project: Developing a Research Roadmap About Processed Foods, Food Processing, and Human Health in the Context of the US Food System

Location: Food Components and Health Laboratory

Project Number: 8040-10700-002-006-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2022
End Date: Sep 30, 2023

Objective:
Intake of processed foods contributes meaningfully to nutrients that are both commonly under consumed (e.g. iron, folate) and overconsumed (e.g. added sugars and sodium) in US populations, making processed food intake and human health a contentious topic in the field of nutrition. The objective of our workshop is to convene nutrition and food science experts to develop a future research roadmap that identifies research priorities for investigating effects of processed foods and food processing on human health and the US food system.

Approach:
A workshop will be organized that will include academic researchers, non-profit organizations, government partners, food industry companies, ingredient processing companies, and commodity groups. The workshop will include presentations and discussions.
