Research Project: Characterization and Modeling of Strawberry Yield Data Using Remote Sensing Technology

Location: Crop Improvement and Protection Research

Project Number: 2038-22000-019-035-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2022
End Date: Oct 31, 2024

Objective:
The objective is to develop a model predicting strawberry yield based on changes in high resolution remote sensing images collected on a weekly basis. Research plots currently part of our precision fumigation and crop rotation strategy for management of soil borne pests of strawberry and vegetable crops based on disease risk will be the focus of the work. This agreement supports additional, more detailed analysis of remote sensing data than currently available by the post-doctoral scholar that will be supported by this agreement.

Approach:
Strawberry yield data is precisely measured to the level of the number of bed feet needed to fill a tray of strawberries to provide data for an economic analysis of the alternative management approach. High resolution remote sensing data will be collected on a weekly basis during crop production to assess plant vigor and model correlations with yield data. Imagery will also support field scouting to identify areas with lower vigor so assessments to identify pathogens can be made. Changes in the values of remote sensing imagery will be examined over time and predictive models on yield and the impact of disease on yield will be developed.
