Objective:
The objectives of this cooperative research are to: 1) Develop system adaptive capacity by refining best management practices based on fundamental biology of weed species into a management toolbox that is incorporated into a real-time climate based decision support system, using a diversity of approaches. 2) Develop an active and engaged extension and outreach program built around fundamental and applied aspects of the Initiative.
Approach:
Extension 1 Rotation Based Theme: Evaluation of intensification and diversification of Pacific Northwest (PNW) cropping systems on weed populations at the practical and fundamental levels, utilizing existing and new intermediate and long term research trials and novel methods based on emerging phenotypic and genomic resources. The approach will include refining best management practices associated with tillage systems (using long-term tillage trials). Augment existing rotational trials with intensive evaluations of weed populations, with a focus on collecting longitudinal data on the effect of discrete traditional and novel management tactics as outlined in the biology based theme. Identify gaps in existing short, intermediate, and long-term trials and work to fill those gaps. Objective 1 Biology Based Theme: Evaluate herbicide resistance, seedling emergence (including patterns), seed longevity, seed retention timing of viable seed production based on timing of emergence, or the capacity to extract soil water after harvest if left uncontrolled for problematic weeds (Italian ryegrass, cheatgrass, wild oat, common lambsquarters, Russian-thistle, or other weeds based on stakeholder feedback or change in condition) using PNW collected germplasm. Object 2 Extension and Outreach Program: Evaluate and report outcomes and impacts to stakeholders utilizing traditional and novel methods, including surveys. Develop decision support tools to integrate climate, biology and control tactics that incorporate probability assessment to actually apply an input as part of the Decision Support System (DSS), windows of opportunity for inputs, consequences of miss-timed or late inputs incorporated into the DSS.
