Research Project: Mass Spectroscopy Analysis of High Polyphenol Sorghum Brans

Location: Grain Quality and Structure Research

Project Number: 3020-43440-002-032-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2022
End Date: Aug 31, 2024

Objective:
The objective of this agreement is to analyze major constituents of sorghum extracts in 4 grain and 6 leaf tissue samples using tandem liquid chromatography- mass spectroscopy (LC/MS).

Approach:
LC/MS will be used to identify major polyphenol and other plant compounds such as saponins in extracts of sorghum bran and leaf tissues. 500g of sample will be used to extract polyphenols and potential saponins. A method will be developed to separate major peaks (compounds) followed by LC-MS analysis. Data will provide chemical profile of compounds for identification.
