Research Project: California-Adapted Barleys for Resistance to Stem Rust (UG99) - An Integrated Effort

Location: Forage Seed and Cereal Research Unit

Project Number: 2072-21500-001-004-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2022
End Date: Oct 31, 2025

Objective:
Produce and advance populations and inbreed lines of California-adapted barley crossed to sources of resistance to the Ug99 strain of stem rust. Produce and advance populations and inbreed lines of California-adapted barley crossed to sources of resistance to the Ug99 strain of stem rust.

Approach:
Make crosses to introgress resistance to Ug99 in UC Davis barley. Advance existing population carrying resistance genes. Test these populations/lines in the African field screening nurseries and also in MN (seedling inoculation). The germplasm improved from this NACA will be available for further development and testing to select lines, carrying resistance to Ug99 and locally adapted.
