Research Project: Developing Phylogenomic-based Diagnostic Tools for Species Identification Across Diptera

Location: Tropical Pest Genetics and Molecular Biology Research Unit

Project Number: 2040-22430-028-027-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2022
End Date: Jun 30, 2024

Objective:
Generate phylogenomic datasets to serve as systematic foundations for diagnostics in Tephritidae and Calliphoridae; use these phylogenomic datasets to both resolve the systematics of these groups as well as identify and evaluate diagnostic markers for species identification and geographic source determination for commonly intercepted pests within these families; and create and demonstrate wet lab approaches and bioinformatic tools for these diagnostic markers which regulatory agencies can employ in their day-to-day phytosanitary management.

Approach:
Develop genome-wide phylogenomic panels to be applied to intercepted and detected material to determine pest status of unknown samples.
