Objective:
The ARS-Wheat Health, Genetics and Quality Research Unit and Washington State University are collaborating to identify novel wheat germplasm for resistance to abiotic and biotic stress and investigate the control of this resistance using genomic and genetic methodologies.

Approach:
Germplasm will be sourced from wild relatives of wheat, from the National Small Grains Collection, and from non-adapted international wheat breeding lines and cultivars. Cooperator will provide facilities for phenotyping for abiotic (drought, cold, heat, seed dormancy) and biotic (stripe rust and Fusarium Head Blight diseases). ARS will provide expertise in genotyping platforms, bioinformatic interpretation of results, and in additional genomic methods including Exome capture and promoter capture. Genetic resources will be phenotyped for the stress response and the associatations between genetic variation and the stress responses will be calculated and reported. This research will result in novel germplasm for resistance and new genetic markers to track that resistance in segregating populations.
