Research Project: Quantifying Dynamic Soil Properties for Soil Health in the Central Valley of California

Location: Water Management Research

Project Number: 2034-13000-013-009-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 1, 2023
End Date: Jul 31, 2025

Objective:
This project will evaluate soil health metrics for soils under cover crops and for vine row soils adjacent to cover crops in two vineyards in the San Joaquin Valley (SJV), one hosted by USDA-ARS in Parlier, CA and a second hosted by UCANR in Five Points, California.

Approach:
This subcontract will facilitate research efforts conducted at a research vineyard in Five Points, CA hosted by UCANR. This site contains a Cerini soil series, which is also ubiquitous, a clay loam, and reflective of soils typical of the West side of the SJV. This agreement supports the establishment and maintenance of a cover crop treatment and bare soil control. Treatment and control subplots will be established using a randomized block design with four replicates per treatment/control. Funds will support establishment of an irrigation system for the cover crops and provide farm labor support for cover crop management. Soil biological and chemical analyses will be performed at USDA-ARS research station in Parlier, California.
