Research Project: Development of Prediction Tools for Diseases and Mycotoxins Affecting Corn to Better Inform Management Decisions in Indiana Corn

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00102-001-035-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2024
End Date: May 31, 2025

Objective:
The objective is to expand and participate in the corn NPTMI objectives to include tar spot of corn and its survival in the debris and spore movement in weather events.

Approach:
The project goals are conducted in three objectives: 1) Establish the association between inoculum intensity, disease development and weather in experimental plot trials; 2) Compare pathogen population levels detected by different spore trap technologies; and 3) Disseminate corn disease information and management techniques through various outputs. To achieve objectives 1 and 2, small plot experiments will be established at the university agricultural center in Wanatah IN and in West Lafayette, IN. The cooperator will supervise the research associates assigned to the project to plant and establish the trails, and collect, ship and/or process corn residue and spore samples, monitor tar spot, gray leaf sport, northern corn leaf blight, and ear rot development, and monitor growing conditions following protocols.
