Objective:
1. Develop entomopathogenic nematode tactics for borer control
a. optimize gel materials for trunk applications in peach and cherry (field trials)
b. screen nematodes for activity on American plum borer (lab studies)
2. Screen modern insecticides and Biopesticides for activity on peachtree borers
a. dose-response toxicity of adult and larval stages (lab)
b. Determine sub-lethal (transovarial) effects of IGRs on borers (lab)
c. optimize dose and timing of insecticides on peach and cherry (field trials)
3. Outreach efforts
Approach:
The research will be conducted on university, USDA and grower cooperator research plots.
USDA-ARS activities will include:
1. Conduct virulence screening against American plum borer to determine the most effective entomopathogenic nematode species or strain.
2. Investigate the effectiveness of various formulations to protect entomopathogenic nematodes from UV radiation and desiccation.
3. Conduct field trials to determine the efficacy of the optimum nematodes and formulations for control of borer pests in stone fruits.
