Research Project: Adaptive Multi-Paddock (AMP) Grazing Research Proposal - Northern Plains

Location: Integrated Cropping Systems Research

Project Number: 3080-12620-006-008-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 1, 2023
End Date: Jul 31, 2025

Objective:
Determine effects of grazing management practices on soil biological measures that relate to soil health and the ecosystem services provided by soil organisms.

Approach:
For the proposed studies, all ranches will be located in the Northern Plains. Soil samples will be collected in a defensible manner from replicated ranches performing specified types of grazing practices - conventional and adaptive, multipaddock grazing. Soil samples will be analyzed in the laboratory for measures that include: basal and substrate-induced respiration, abundances of soil bacteria and fungi, presence of specific indicator taxa, and functional gene abundances that support ecologically-important processes such as C and N transformations.
