Research Project: Characterization of Potato Mop-Top Virus (PMTV) Reactions in Widely Grown Potato Varities

Location: Small Grains and Potato Germplasm Research

Project Number: 2050-21000-036-015-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 10, 2024
End Date: Dec 20, 2024

Objective:
Characterize the reaction of widely grown potato varieties when naturally infected with Potato mop-top virus (PMTV). Compare results from this site in southern Idaho with a second site in southeast Idaho.

Approach:
Use seven varieties which includes ones that are sensitive to tuber symptoms caused by PMTV and ones that are resistant or insensitive to tuber symptoms. The field from which these varieties come from has a history of powdery scab caused by Spongospora subterranea (the vector for PMTV) and the virus is present. Tubers from four replications of each varieties will be washed and sampled for RT-PCR tests for PMTV and scores will be taken for tuber symptoms.
