Research Project: Comparative Genomic Analysis of Fusarium Species

Location: Cereal Disease Lab

Project Number: 5062-21220-024-008-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2023
End Date: May 31, 2028

Objective:
Objective 1) Construct high-quality genome sequence resources for 34 Fusarium species; Objective 2) Perform comparative genomic analyses to understand the evolution, pathogenicity, and specialized metabolite production of Fusarium sp. on diverse crops.

Approach:
ARS will receive the strains from the ARS Culture Collection (NRRL) and extract high-quality, high molecular weight genomic DNA. Genomic DNA will be shipped to a US-based company for sequencing. The Cooperator lab will contract for genome sequencing services. The Cooperator will perform genome assembly and annotation, in collaboration with ARS. ARS and Cooperator will perform comparative and evolutionary genomic analyses of Fusarium species using the newly generated and existing genome resources. Manuscripts detailing the results of these analyses will be submitted for publication, and the new high-quality genome assemblies will be submitted to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) sequence repository to make them available to the wider scientific community.
