Research Project: Leverage of USDA Operational Resources for the Development of New Sorghum Technologies and Breeding Germplasm

Location: Plant Stress and Germplasm Development Research

Project Number: 3096-21000-024-007-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 15, 2023
End Date: Dec 31, 2025

Objective:
1) Develop grain sorghum germplasm with improved abiotic stress tolerance. 2) Develop forage sorghum SCA resistance and improved forage quality. 3) Investigation of new traits in sorghum that increase yield, quality, or profitability.

Approach:
The program will utilize traditional and molecular breeding approaches to accomplish defined research goals. We will utilize the expertise of USDA and university research partners where appropriate to help develop improved sorghum lines. New technologies to be adopted and utilized in the breeding program will include marker assisted selection, genomic selection, rapid generation advancement, and high throughout phenotyping. Any improved breeding line, hybrid, or novel technology will be provided to stakeholders rapidly using material transfer agreements (MTA) and/or license agreements.
