Research Project: Evaluating Models of Radiation Transfer and Carbon-Water Exchange in Vineyard and Orchard Canopies

Location: Sustainable Agricultural Water Systems Research

Project Number: 2032-13220-002-017-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 3, 2023
End Date: Apr 3, 2025

Objective:
The overall objective of this research to develop and apply mechanistic, three-dimensional models of perennial crop systems to understand land-atmosphere fluxes of water, energy, and carbon at vineyard and orchard sites.

Approach:
Quantifying radiation transfer through plant canopies is necessary to understand and predict biological and physical processes occurring at the land-atmosphere interface. This work will link a detailed three-dimensional (3D) leaf-resolving radiation model (Helios) to observation-based approaches to advance our understanding of radiation transfer in crop canopies. The results of this work will provide quantitative guidance to improve the calculation of radiation transfer in crop canopies and enhance the understanding and prediction of evapotranspiration and productivity in vineyards and orchards.
